Databases About Crop Wild Relatives
The Crop Wild Relatives (CWR) Project generated enormous amounts of data about the wild relatives collected, conserved, evaluated and pre-bred. It developed a number of databases and information systems to support the capture, management and sharing of these data, all of which are available to the public.
Genesys
Passport data on the crop wild relatives collected during the project is stored in Genesys, an online platform managed by the Crop Trust. By the end of 2021, data on 4,264 seed samples collected under the project were available on Genesys. A map showing where the accessions were collected is available here.
Germinate
Germinate is the primary platform used to store, visualize and share data from the Crop Wild Relatives Project’s pre-breeding programs and crop evaluation trials. Fifteen of the 19 crop pre-breeding projects have uploaded data to the platform, including germplasm, genotypic, trial and geographical data generated during the projects, and information on the projects and publications associated with them.
The crop wild relative databases on Germinate are available here.
The Harlan and de Wet Crop Wild Relative Inventory
The CWR Project created the Harlan and de Wet Crop Wild Relative Inventory to provide a list of CWR species to be prioritized for collection and conservation, based on the economic importance of the crop to which they are related, the level of threat to each population or species, and their potential for use in crop breeding.
Two concepts were considered for evaluating the potential use of CWR in pre-breeding (the pioneering work of Harlan and de Wet (1971), which divides genepools according to ease of breeding; and the taxon group concept (Maxted et al. 2006), which uses taxonomic classifications of the crop genus as a proxy for relative crossability).
The inventory also included key ancillary data such as the geographic occurrence of the species, seed storage behavior and herbaria housing major collections of crop wild relatives.
The original inventory of 1,400 priority species has since been incorporated into the Crop Wild Relative Data section of the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, which is being continuously updated.
Crop Wild Relative Global Occurrence Database
The Project compiled more than 5 million records about the distribution of crops and their wild relatives, including taxonomic and geographic information. The Project greatly appreciates the invaluable contribution of all those who provided these data (see below).
These data can be used to map the known distributions of crop wild relatives and are covered under the Creative Commons license Attribution (CC BY 4.0).
Download the Crop Wild Relative Global Occurrence Database here.
Data Sources
The CWR Global Occurrence Database is based on data made available by many genebanks, herbaria, national programs, international agricultural research centers and individual scientists around the world. Without these contributions, the CWR Project and the resources presented here would not have been possible; we are immensely grateful for their cooperation. Click on the expandable list below to discover all of the data sources.
